Overview:
About Gorillas in East Africa
Hidden deep within the emerald rainforests of East Africa lives one of the world’s rarest and most awe-inspiring creatures — the mountain gorilla. These gentle giants, found only in the misty highlands of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, share about 98% of their DNA with humans, making every encounter feel profoundly intimate. Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain on Earth, and Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects nearly half of them. Trekking to see gorillas in their natural habitat is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world — a humbling opportunity to stand face-to-face with a species that embodies strength, tenderness, and resilience.
Itinerary
Day 1: Journey to the Heart of the Forest
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your Raa Safaris guide will warmly welcome you and provide an overview of your adventure ahead. Enjoy a scenic drive through Uganda’s lush countryside toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the country’s southwestern corner.
Along the way, stop at the Equator Line for photos and refreshments — a perfect chance to stand with one foot in each hemisphere. You’ll continue through rolling hills, tea plantations, and vibrant roadside villages, with lunch en route in Mbarara.
Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, surrounded by the serene sounds of the forest. Unwind and enjoy a hearty dinner as you prepare for the incredible days ahead.
Day 2: Cultural Immersion with the Batwa Community
After breakfast, set out for a guided cultural walk to visit the Batwa community, one of Africa’s oldest surviving indigenous groups. Once forest dwellers of Bwindi, the Batwa share captivating stories of their traditional way of life — from hunting and honey gathering to herbal medicine and spiritual rituals.
You’ll witness traditional dances, storytelling sessions, and perhaps even join in their rhythmic songs. Return to your lodge for lunch and an afternoon of relaxation. As evening falls, enjoy a fireside briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette and logistics from your guide.
Optional Add-ons:
- Visit a local craft market for handmade souvenirs.
- Enjoy a forest nature walk to spot birds and butterflies.
Day 3: The Gorilla Trekking Experience
Today marks the highlight of your safari — tracking the endangered mountain gorillas. After an early breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the park headquarters for a short briefing and group assignment. Accompanied by expert rangers, venture deep into the misty forest in search of a gorilla family.
The trek may take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location. Once found, you’ll have a full hour to observe them in their natural habitat — watching young gorillas play, mothers nurse, and the mighty silverback keep a watchful eye.
It’s an unforgettable, soul-stirring experience that few on Earth ever witness. Afterward, you’ll receive a Gorilla Tracking Certificate before returning to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and celebratory dinner.
Optional Add-ons:
- Upgrade to a second gorilla trek (permits required).
- Visit a tea plantation or enjoy a guided birdwatching walk around Bwindi.
Day 4: Return to Entebbe or Kampala
After breakfast, begin your return journey through Uganda’s scenic landscapes. You’ll stop in Mbarara for lunch and at roadside markets to pick up crafts or local snacks. Continue to Entebbe or Kampala, where your guide will drop you off for your onward flight or hotel stay.
